Bearded Dragon Cowboy

One of the many pets I have in my house is a bearded dragon named Leo. My wife had him out one night so I decided to draw him. Of course I needed to put my own twist on him, and the above bearded dragon cowboy is the result. It was very nice having a live model on hand to get his head and arms just right. Hope you enjoy!

Wolf

Another one straight out of my sketchbook. I wanted to incorporate some background in my drawings as I usually just focus on the character. I had a lot of fun finding reference for his armor and making it feel right for a wolf. Hope you enjoy!

Yeti

Here's my rendition of a super happy Yeti! I wanted to take myself out of my usual comfort zone for this one, and had a lot of fun trying to worry more about the shapes, and design of the Yeti as opposed to over doing the anatomy and structure that I find myself leaning on more. Hope you enjoy!

Medieval Ram

This pencil sketch is straight out of one of my many sketchbooks. I've always really enjoyed Disney's Robin Hood. The designs of the anthropomorphic characters are so fun, full of life, and helped inspire this piece. Not to mention the beautiful work of Juanjo Guarnido in Blacksad. I don't remember exactly  what I was thinking with this piece. Looking back on it, I like to think that he's on a journey across some great hilly plains to warn of coming danger. Hope you enjoy!

Space Kitty Colored

I really enjoyed adding the color to this one. The orange and blue color palette worked out very nicely, and added to the warm tone I wanted for the piece. I decided to not go black with the background 1, because I need a new black marker, and 2, because I was worried it may take away from the space kitty. I would like to bring it into Photoshop to try out a black space behind the astro-kitty. Or I might just have to buy a new black marker. Hope you enjoy!

Rocksteady

What kid of the 80's didn't love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? I was inspired by the very good, new Ninja Turtles animated show, and toys from Nickelodeon that came out around 2012-2013. I always liked the mutant rhino and warthog that the turtles fought and got inspired to draw rocksteady. These drawings were done far apart time wise, but I still like playing around with the fun shapes that can be found in rhinos. With Bebop and Rocksteady cast for the next TMNT movie, I may have to do another. Hope you enjoy!

Blue Dragon

This was a fun drawing to do. Especially now that I'm animating dragons on the project I'm working on now. I wanted to try to use more curves and straights with this drawing for a more graphic feel. The color is all in marker again, which is such a fun medium to use. I definitely recommend trying it! Hope you enjoy!

Figure Drawing Saturday

I've been lucky enough to be able to hire a model for the past two months for a 3 hour session of figure drawing. This weekend was a day for experimenting, using colour and trying things I haven't before. I was very happy that I pushed myself out of my comfort zone for the session. I'm interested to see what will come moving forward with my drawings. Hope you enjoy!

Viking

I drew up this savage looking fellow a little while ago now, but I'm still happy with his overall look. Unlike what my students thought, this viking is not inspired by Skyrim, but rather Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer character. I did a preliminary sketch while at work and then built on that. I'd love to animate him swinging his big ax around one of these days. Hope you enjoy it!

Space Kitty!

In this case, a space Ocelot. My wife and I are finding some more time to draw these days, which is really nice. When we have the chance, one of us will pick a topic and we'll draw for the evening. She picked space kitty, and this is what I ended up doing. He's out on a space walk to go repair a section of the space station he's staying on. My wife took the pic and got in a little bit of my preliminary planning sketches, so I decided to leave them in. Hope you enjoy!

Hulk 2.0!

Here's my coloured version of the Green Goliath. I'm very happy with the way the colors turned out. I approached it as a modeled drawing, and added more layers of pigment to push the elements back into space. I'm hoping to keep working with markers and colour and keep improving at both. Hope you enjoy!

Basset Bustle

Every year my wife and I head out to Hamilton to support the HBSPCA for their annual Basset Bustle. There were over 100 Bassets running, sniffing and howling around the dog park. It's so fun seeing all the different squishy floppy wrinkly dogs all over the place. I took it as an opportunity to draw as many of the Bassets as I could between the different events during the day.  Above are a selection of the drawings I was happy with from the day. The sleepy puppy at the top is my dog, Jem, being adorable as always. Hope you enjoy!

Thor

The next Avenger on the list is the all mighty Thor!!!(insert lightning sound effects here) I wanted to draw a younger looking Thor this time around. There have been a number of different looks for Thor in Marvel comics that many very talented artists have created. and I would like to do a couple different versions of the thunder god.  I've been having a lot of fun drawing the past few heroes. I'll have to see if I'll attempt coloring this one. Until then, enjoy the pencil sketch!

Captain America

This is the drawing that got me started with the Avengers drawings. I always like to think of Captain America as an old worn out veteran who just won't stop fighting for what he believes in. I started it with red col-erase, which makes him a little more red than if I were to have just used pencil. I also got into my wife's big bag of markers and thought, why not give him a little colour.  After all, it's about time I started using it in my work.  Hope you enjoy!

Hulk!

With Avengers 2 out, I got in the mood to draw up some of the characters from the film. Here's the Hulk doing his thing looking nice and angry. I had a lot of fun with this one. I didn't have a set idea when I started this drawing, so I kept it very gestural and loose near the beginning. It changed a few times as I got more into the drawing trying to make fun choices until I finally found the end result. Hope you enjoy!

Barbarians and Cyborg-Werewolves, Oh my!

So it has been a really, really, really long time since my last post.  And shame on me for hiding my artwork away for a year.  I was hoping that I could maintain at least a pace of one post a year, but life got pretty crazy last year and it doesn't seem like things will slow down anytime soon.  That being said, a post is long overdue, so here are a couple of Photoshop pieces I've recently done.  The barbarian up at the top is based off of an idea that I started storyboarding out a while ago.  I sat down at my computer and wanted to draw something and I thought it would be fun to re-visit my warrior, and see if I remembered how to colour stuff in photoshop.  The Cyber Wolf on the bottom was done while I had a day off from work.  Inspired by one of my favourite games of the '90's, Killer Instinct, I did it as a bit of an homage to Sabre-Wolf.  I hope you enjoy the two pics!
